This tour provides a look at Dar es Salaam with some insight into daily activities. Your driver will take you through the city center and toward Mnazi Moja Park where you can see a replica of the Uhuru Torch Monument. The original one was erected on Mt. Kilimanjaro to commemorate freedom from colonialism that came with independence. Continue with your sightseeing drive, heading to Village museum, Tinganga market, the Mwenge Carvings Market and National Museum where you will be able to see historical and archaeological items, among them Louis and Mary Leakey’s findings from Olduvai Gorge. These human fossils displayed in the Hall of Man include the skull of the so-called Nutcracker Man. There is also a collection of tribal ornaments, headdresses, witchcraft paraphernalia and traditional musical instruments collected from various regions in Tanzania. (The museum is not air-conditioned). The tour starts and ends in Dar es Salaam city center

0900hrs, depart from Dar es Salaam city center to Bagamoyo. Bagamoyo has played various historical roles in Tanzania. Apart from being a slave and ivory port, it was also a German headquarters in 1891. Explorers such as Burton, Speke, Grant, Livingstone and Stanley all passed through this town. The name Bagamoyo comes from the Swahili words “bwaga moyo”, meaning “throw down you heart,” a despair expressed by people who were captured as slaves, knowing that they faced uncertain future. On arrival, visit the Kaole Ruins, ruins of the Shirazai trade town (13th- 17th century), Old ferry on the mighty Rufiji River. Lunch will be served at Paradise Holiday Resort. (Visit of the Bagamoyo School of Arts for a Ngoma (traditional dance) session may be arranged upon prior notice. Extra cost applies). The tour ends in Dar es Salaam city center at around 1730hrs.
Dar es Salaam means 'Haven of Peace' in Arabic. It is a city of approximatly 3.5 million people, and is a great place to start and end your safari, with easy access to Zanzibar by regular ferry and light plane services. Dar has an international airport and several major bus and train stations. Though Dodoma is the named capital, Dar is the economic and business capital of Tanzania. Rich in Swahili culture resultant from the lively blend of Arab and Bantu influences, the city also has quite a cosmopolitan feel in places.
Whilst in Dar, there is plenty of night life, ranging from modern western style bars and restaurants to vibrant local establishments. There is a medditeranian approach to evenings out. Many people dont go out before 9pm, and at weekends will stay out partying untill the early hours of the morning, maybe finishing the night in one of the late clubs.
Day trips from Dar es Salaam include visits to Bat Caves, Beach Excursions, Horse Riding and Forest Walks. Its also possible to go sailing or diving for the day.
Unless otherwise arranged at the time of booking, your accommodation in Dar will be on a Bed & Breakfast basis only.
